Responsive = Responsible
Responsive websites, as opposed to a simple 'adaptive' website, are ones that both respond and adapt to fit the viewers browser window, regardless of which hardware they are using.
This is beneficial for two reasons:
1) It gives an overall better user experience in all formats, be it desktop, laptop. iPad, netbook, iPhone (or any smartphone).
2) It does away with the extra cost and time involved, in having to build a second 'mobile-friendly' version of a website.
Basically, what you see in your desktop browser, will respond to look the same on your mobile phone.
This is, of course, an extreme simplification of what goes on behind the scenes, and the best way to discover it, is to use it.
As a new format, not everything can be forced to work perfectly on it , but, as the months progress, more and more software will appear, to begin the road toward a responsive website layout on all hardware.
This website has been built using the 'responsive' lay out format; so simply reduce the browser window to see how the website changes, or, better still, check it out on your smartphone and/or iPad.
